What is the difference between acrylic and perspex?

You may know acrylic as Perspex, Plexiglas or Altuglas, these are all brand names for the same material, acrylic, in the same way “Hoover” is to vacuum cleaners.

Are there varieties of acrylic?

Acrylics vary in quality and there are many different types of acrylic. In the framing world, the two most common you will see are cast acrylic and extruded acrylic. These two are visually the same to the untrained eye, but are made using different processes. Due to its manufacturing process, cast acrylic is generally a bit more expensive and has a higher optical quality. Be sure to ask which you are being offered if dealing with other companies.

We only ever use cast acrylic in our frames - we prefer Perspex and Plexiglas.

What are the benefits to using UV-resistant acrylic?

Few if any acrylics will completely block out harmful UV rays. Acrylic blocks out ultra violet rays in the lower end of the UV spectrum. These are not the ones adversely effecting artwork (or indeed your skin). The harmful rays are at the top end of the spectrum. These are not blocked out using standard acrylics.  You can use a UV retardant or resistant acrylic to help protect your artwork from degeneration (such as fade). It is usually more expensive than ordinary cast acrylic, but is often worth the investment to protect valuable artwork from UV damage.

How should I care for my acrylic?

You can clean acrylic with a good acrylic and anti static cleaner. These are available at all good acrylic and anti static cleaner outlets!

How should I deal with static energy on my acrylic?

Acrylic is very static - just think of that jumper you had as a kid. We suggest cleaning your acrylic with a soft lint free cloth. Wipe in one direction across the glazing surface one stroke at a time. This will help to de-static the acrylic. Essentially - the opposite of the balloon on your acrylic jumper trick!

Does acrylic scratch?

Acrylic can scratch if not cared for correctly - we suggest you follow these guidlines to avoid scratches and extend the life of your acrylic products:

Never lean/lie your acrylic products against a wall or surface face down

Never use a fibrous cloth to wipe acrylic, such as a duster, as this will cause a patina over time

Never clean your acrylic products whilst wearing rings, watches or bracelets which could scratch the surface

Never use abrasive products on your acrylic products
